Vocabulary: matter property phase physical and chemical properties texture magnetism mass volume density microscope triple beam balance length, width, height mixture and solution
We will begin the year exploring the states of matter and their physical properties. We will measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects (based on guidelines from Archimedes), use a triple beam balance to measure mass, make observations with our microscopes, and use our outdoor learning lab to help us analyze connections to the real world.
Please begin to study the differences between mixtures and solutions. Eventually, you should be able to explain how both mixtures and solutions can be separated. Use all the real-world examples you can think of....fruit salad, salt water, trail mix, plant fertilizer, coffee with cream and sugar.
Begin observing the patterns of the moon and the weather. These are objectives that will come later this year, but the sooner we start talking about it, the more time we have to point them out in real-time. It helps us understand so much more.
